STAGE I

Stage name: Identification of production flow of cold rolled steel strips and correlation of technological processes stages

Activity I.1 – Identification and modelling in the production flow of cold rolled steel strips, functional analysis of automation and management system of the cold rolling process at the quarto reversible mill existing at Galfinband S.A.

The objective of this stage of contract no. 237/08.10.2008 consists in presentation of the technological flow of the rolling process of steel strips and the functional analysis for the production automation and management system. The functions of the two systems mentioned have been established, starting from the technical and scientific solutions elaborated by the research and development team of Galfinband S.A. Galati, in partnership with the “Low Danube” University of Galati .

The functional analysis performed within this project has a multi-discipline character, including the following fields: industrial information technology and management, automation, electrical, mechanical and technological engineering. The new requirements call for integral rolling of steel strips at a level of quality and surface quality tolerances according to the international norms, with low operation and maintenance costs and accidental stops. The technical solutions adopted considered the modernization which has been performed so far abroad; these modernization works have had two major components:

a)  Utilization of high performance measurement and control instruments: strip speed measurement device by laser, strip profile measurement device by a measurement roll provided with piezo-electrical sensors, digital system for adjustment of work rolls speed, high performance hydraulic systems for movement of pressure rolls, highly accurate devices for measurement of thickness deviations, etc.

b)   Utilization of some high performance multi-level calculation systems, which ensure control of rolling process by certain priority levels.

In this contract stage, the following objectives were achieved:

•  The information system structure was adopted at the level of executive management.

•  The architecture was adopted of the database management system.

•  The technological parameters were analyzed for performance of rolling control and the types of field elements which will be implemented in the structure of the mill existing at Galfinband SA.

The parameters of rolling process can be determined as follows:

  • by direct calculation, using the general mathematical model of the rolling process in order to solve the equations derived in the theory of yield; in this case a series of reductionist hypotheses is required on the behaviour of rolling stands and on the characteristics of the strip being rolled; the precision of such a calculation depends greatly upon the hypotheses used and the calculation effort is considerable;
  • indirectly, using the real-time mathematical model of the rolling process and a database which contains the measured values of these parameters during some previous rolling processes; accuracy of such a calculation depends on the quality of database and the calculation effort is minimal.

Both methods have both advantages and disadvantages, but estimation can be made that the minimum calculation and the actual data collected from the rolling process make the second method preferred.

The modernization solutions of power electronic equipment associated with the high-precision measurement transducers for rolls, coiler and decoiler speed.

Substantiation of the technical solution for adjustment of strip thickness: this function is essential for improvement of steel strips quality according to the new requirements of rolled products market.

The types of measurement and control devices required for the automatic control and adjustment system, as well as the structure of information system and the control levels were established.

The functions of automation system and the hardware and software technical means of the application were configured (I/O modules, process computers, industrial communication systems, communication, basic and application software).

The technical and economic solutions adopted in this contract stage lead to getting optimal results in relation to the available resources.

We believe that the objectives of this contract stage were met entirely.
